Travel Smarter Asia is practical guidance for people traveling to Asia from further away, where the entry rules, the paperwork and the payment systems are genuinely unfamiliar rather than merely inconvenient.

A few of the destinations here are not in Asia by a strict reading: the Gulf states, and Australia and New Zealand where they connect onward. They are covered because they are the hubs and stopovers an Asia trip actually routes through, and the paperwork you meet in transit counts as part of the journey.

How an article gets written

We start from the official page, not from a search result. The source text is captured before anything summarizes it, so the claims can be checked against something that is not our own writing about it.

Every factual claim has to be traceable to a quote from that source. Where a claim cannot be anchored, it does not get published, even when we believe it is true. That rule costs us material regularly and it is the reason the rest can be relied on.

Why we sometimes refuse to give you a number

Some articles deliberately send you to the official page instead of repeating what is on it. Lists of visa-free countries are the clearest case: they change, and two official sources have already disagreed with each other while we were checking. A copy of that list on our site is the thing most likely to mislead you, so we point at the source and say when we last looked.

What we watch after publishing

Every published article's source is re-fetched and compared against what it said when we wrote it. If the guidance moves, the article gets re-checked. A dated article that nobody is watching is just an old article.

Every article is watched this way, and the list of sources grows as the articles do.

How this site is paid for

By affiliate links, on some of our articles. If you follow one and buy something, we may earn a commission and you pay nothing extra. There is no advertising, and nothing here is sponsored or paid for by the companies we write about.

A link that can earn us anything says so where it sits, in the sentence you are reading, rather than in a notice at the bottom of a page you were never going to open. It is also marked in the page's own code as a paid link, which tells search engines the same thing it tells you.

Only some of the programs we have applied to have approved us. Until one does, its link is an ordinary link that pays us nothing, which is why the disclosure appears on a link only when it is true of that link.

Customs & Duty-Free articles carry no affiliate links at all. Someone reading about what they may bring through a border is anxious, not shopping, and a booking link there would cost the credibility this site is built on. That rule is enforced when the site is built, not left to whoever is writing.

What no arrangement changes is the sourcing. No commercial relationship decides what we say about an entry rule, a customs limit or a deadline. Those come from the official source or they do not get published, and that test is the same whether a page earns anything or not. If the two ever conflict, the rule wins and the money goes.

Some articles here are our own judgment rather than an operator's rule: which VPN habits are worth having, whether chasing airline status pays. Those are labeled as opinion on the page itself, they cite no official source because none exists, and a commercial relationship does not buy a recommendation in them either. Where we name a product we say why, and we do not claim to use something we do not.

Getting it wrong

Entry requirements change without much warning, and the official source is always the final word. If something here is out of date or wrong, the link at the bottom of every article goes straight to the authority that decides it.
