Booking Direct or Through a Site: What Changes

What you give up on a third-party booking, when the OTA is still right, and the rebooking problem

Some links here are affiliate links. If you buy through one we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. It never changes what we recommend, and the pages that carry no links say so on our about page.

Whether to book direct or through a site depends on whether the hotel is a chain or an independent.

What a third-party booking costs you at a chain

Book a chain hotel through a third-party site and you typically lose:

  • Points for the stay.
  • Elite night credit, so the booking does nothing for your status.
  • Elite benefits on arrival (the upgrade, the breakfast, the late checkout), often, because the property treats the rate as non-qualifying.

Chains do this on purpose. They pay commission on those bookings and want you in their own channel, so the loyalty maths is only ever available on the direct rate.

Rebooking is where it hurts

The benefit gap is predictable. The service gap only shows up when something breaks.

If your flight is cancelled, the property is overbooked or you need to change a date, a hotel can act at once on a booking it holds directly. On a third-party booking the standard answer is that they cannot amend it and you must contact whoever you booked through. That is a call centre in another time zone, on office hours, with its own policy.

When the third-party site is the right tool

None of that applies to small independent properties, and in much of Asia they are a large share of the good places to stay.

A guesthouse with no loyalty programme costs you no points, because there were none. The booking site may offer better payment options, a review corpus worth reading, a cancellation policy the property does not offer itself, and a written record in a language you both understand, which helps when you confirm a booking across a language barrier.

Booking sites are also better at discovery in an unfamiliar city. Trip.com is the one we reach for across Asia, because its coverage of independent properties in second-tier Chinese and Southeast Asian cities is better than the Western sites’.

Many places worth staying in are not hotels at all. Booking.com’s own fast-facts page, checked 12 September 2026, counts 9.1 million homes, apartments and other unique places among more than 32 million listings. A hotel group’s own channel has no equivalent, because a hotel group does not own any apartments. For a flat in Fukuoka or a family guesthouse in Luang Prabang, the aggregator is where the property is listed in the first place.

Comparing the two rates

Direct and third-party rates often include different things: taxes, breakfast, cancellation terms, and whether you pay now or at the property. A headline that looks cheaper often is not once those are equalised.

Chains generally publish a best-rate guarantee promising to match or beat a lower rate found elsewhere. These work, but they are claims processes with conditions, and they take effort. Know they exist and do not plan around them.

Which channel to use

Chain hotel: book direct, almost always. The points, the night credit, the benefits and a hotel that can actually help you are together worth more than a small rate difference.

Independent property: use whichever channel gives the better terms and the clearer paper trail. That is often a booking site, and there is no loyalty cost to weigh. For a home or an apartment, search the inventory that actually lists them, because a hotel search will not have covered it.

Either way: compare the final total including taxes and cancellation terms, not the number in the search results.
