Malaysia Airlines' Three Economy Fares, and the Discount Only One Channel Pays

Value, Basic and Flex differ by more than baggage. Two of them carry a discount on your next ticket that exists only if you buy in one place

Malaysia Airlines renames its Economy fares from time to time. The current set dates from 10 April 2025, and one difference between the fares outlasts the trip you are booking: a discount on your next ticket that is earned and spent in one channel only.

The three fares, and Lite is not one of them

The airline lists the Economy Class Fare Family brands as “Economy Value (formerly Economy Lite), Basic and Flex”, each with “different benefits such as baggage allowance, seat selection, and priority services, along with varying flexibility for refunds and rebooking.”

Two rows changed for the better. Economy Value now includes 20kg of checked baggage, where Lite included none, and Basic gained complimentary standard seat selection on 10 April 2025, having had none.

Infants are priced the same way on every fare: “The infant fare is 10% of the applicable adult fare across all fare families and includes a 10kg baggage allowance.”

The discount only one channel pays

The airline states the condition twice, in identical words:

The Next Purchase Discount is applicable for tickets purchased via malaysiaairlines.com or the Malaysia Airlines mobile app only and is redeemable through malaysiaairlines.com or the Malaysia Airlines mobile app only.

A Basic fare earns 10% off your next ticket and a Flex fare 15%. You earn it only by buying on the airline’s website or app, and you can spend it only there. The same Basic fare at the same price is worth less bought anywhere else, and no price comparison shows the gap. If you fly Malaysia Airlines more than once a year, buy through the airline’s own site and app, where the discount is both earned and spent.

What Economy Value leaves out

Value is the entry fare and “does not come with complimentary seat selection”. You pre-purchase a seat through Manage My Booking on the website or app, or through the contact centre or a ticketing office.

For extra bags the airline gives an order of preference: “pre-purchase extra baggage allowance on MH website via ‘manage my booking’”, and failing that, “pay the excess baggage fee during the check-in process at the check-in counter.” The two prices are not the same, and the second is paid at a counter with a queue behind you.

Mixing fares on one ticket

Combine fares on one ticket, say a Value outbound and a Flex return, and the stricter half applies in both directions.

On changes, “the rebooking fare rules will apply the highest fee following the respective change fare component of the flight segment(s).” On refunds, the terms “follow the highest refund fee of the refunded fare for the respective segment(s), or the most restrictive fare rules may apply.”

In the airline’s own example, a fully unused ticket combining Economy Value, which has a refund fee, with Flex, which does not, is refunded under “the refund fee of Economy Value.”

Routes with their own rules

Three exclusions apply.

The structure covers “all MH sectors except for Malaysia-Japan routes, and AMAL-operated flights.” If you book Kuala Lumpur to Tokyo, the table above is not your fare.

Direct Malaysia Airlines flights between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore use Value, Basic and Shuttle. Shuttle replaces Flex and lets you board an earlier flight on Malaysia Airlines or Firefly metal, subject to availability. Moving to Firefly is not self-service: a passenger “must call MH Contact Centre / ATO / CTO for rebooking at least two (2) hours before departure,” because the departure airport is different. Firefly now uses two Kuala Lumpur airports and splits them by aircraft type, which is why that clause matters.

Tickets issued before 10 April 2025

A ticket issued before that date for travel after it does not pick up the new benefits by itself. A fully unused ticket takes the new attributes on reissue, with one exception: a ticket “paid under the Lite fare, the Lite fare remains non-refundable, or the most restrictive rules apply.” A partially used ticket keeps its original conditions and baggage allowance.

Fees with no published price

The FAQ names fees but prices none of them: the rebooking fee on Value, the refund fee on Value and Basic, the seat-selection charge and the excess baggage rate at the counter. A live booking for your own route and date is the only place to see them, and we will not guess. Run that booking on the airline’s own site or app, where a Basic or Flex fare also earns its next-ticket discount.
