Read on the official pages on 7 October 2026.
- Connecting at Hamad International Airport (HIA) and staying airside needs no visa.
- Leaving the airport means passing Qatari immigration, so you need visa-free entry or a visa.
- The Qatar Transit Visa is for Qatar Airways passengers who are not visa-free: QAR 100, at least 6 hours, issued at a desk in the terminal, valid up to 4 days.
Do you need a visa to transit Doha if you stay in the airport?
No. The airport’s transfers page says: “Please note that it is not required for you to acquire a transit Visa if you are not leaving the airport.” Passengers arrive, transfer and depart in the same terminal building, and the transfer halls are on concourses A, B, C and D. Do not follow the signs to Arrivals. Ask at a transfer desk if you want to exit.
No official page we read sets a maximum time airside. The boarding gate closes 20 minutes before departure. The Airport Hotel offers four-star rooms “for stays as short as five hours”. Which airlines give you a free room at their hub covers Qatar Airways’ conditions.
Can you leave the airport on a layover?
Yes, if Qatar admits you. Qatar Airways’ tour terms say: “if the tour requires you to pass through immigration control to enter the State of Qatar, you will require a visa.” The Visit Qatar visa checker tells you which of three outcomes applies to your passport.
- Visa-free entry. You clear immigration and go. Visit Qatar says “visa-free entry” is the new name for what used to be called visa on arrival, and the checker still labels some results “Visa on arrival”, with a QAR 100 fee paid at the airport.
- A Hayya e-visa. Apply online before you travel. The Hayya FAQ gives the fee as QAR 100, non-refundable.
- The Qatar Transit Visa. The fallback below, for Qatar Airways passengers who are not visa-free.
The pages disagree on how many passports are visa-free: Discover Qatar says 102+ nationalities, Visit Qatar’s airport page 102 countries, Qatar Airways’ tour terms 100+. Use the checker, not a number.
What the Visit Qatar checker returned on 7 October 2026
| Passport | Result |
|---|---|
| United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, India | “Enter visa-free”, passport valid at least three months from arrival, confirmed hotel booking on arrival |
| United States | “Visa on Arrival”, same passport and hotel conditions; a visa valid two years with multiple entries, each stay up to 90 days |
| Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, South Korea, China | “Enter visa-free or get easy access with Hayya”, passport valid at least three months. Hong Kong and Singapore passports that also hold a valid Schengen, UK, US, Australian, New Zealand or Canadian visa get “Enter visa-free” with a confirmed hotel booking |
| Taiwan | “Visa on arrival” |
| Philippines, Vietnam, Nepal | “Visa required”: apply for a Hayya A1 visa |
| Pakistan, Thailand | “Visa on arrival, Discover Qatar Hotel reservation required” |
The checker has more branches than this, including GCC residents, so run your own passport. Discover Qatar names India, Pakistan, Thailand and Iran as passports that must make a Discover Qatar hotel booking before a visa on arrival, and says others may be added.
How long can you stay if you are visa-free?
The official pages give no single standard stay length. The figures they state:
- US citizens: up to 90 days per visit.
- GCC Resident Visa (A2): up to 30 days.
- Joint Qatar and Oman tourist visa: 30 days.
- Transit visa: up to 4 days.
Hayya’s tourist visa lists a return flight ticket and three months of passport validity as requirements.
The Qatar Transit Visa: fee, hours, validity and where to get it
| Question | What the official pages say |
|---|---|
| Fee | QAR 100 (Discover Qatar) |
| Who | Passengers flying with Qatar Airways who are not eligible for visa-free entry (Visit Qatar) |
| Minimum layover | 6 hours (Visit Qatar) |
| Maximum layover | Not stated as a cap; see validity |
| Validity | Up to 4 days (Visit Qatar); Hayya’s FAQ lists a transit visa of 4 days, single entry |
| Where | Discover Qatar Transit Tour desk, Duty Free Plaza South, Hamad International Airport |
| Online | No application form is described |
| Onward ticket | Not stated for the transit visa |
Visit Qatar says: “Passengers flying with Qatar Airways and transiting for a minimum of 6 hours at Hamad International Airport, who are not eligible for visa-free entry but are interested in a Doha transit tour, can apply for a transit visa at the Discover Qatar Transit Desk located in the airport.” It adds that for travellers who want to stay longer, “a transit visa valid for up to 4 days is available”, and points to stopover packages. Discover Qatar gives the price: you can apply “for QAR 100 at the Discover Qatar Transit Tour desk in the Duty Free area of Hamad International Airport.”
Qatar Airways’ page lists two Discover Qatar transit desks, in Duty Free Plaza South and in North Node, Concourse C. Its visa wording names only Plaza South, so go there. Hayya lists the transit visa too but says “Currently, this visa is exclusively available through the aviation industry for transit passengers”, so the official pages describe no Hayya application for it. Qatar Airways’ old page at qatarairways.com/en/transit-visa.html still showed “Page not found” on 7 October 2026.
On the official wording the visa is for Qatar Airways passengers only. A passenger on another airline who is not visa-free is pointed to Hayya. The pages tie the visa to a transit tour, and Qatar Airways’ terms require a visa, visa-free entry or visa-on-arrival eligibility before you can buy a tour. No page says whether you must buy a tour to be issued the visa, so ask at the desk. Tours from other operators on Viator are a separate booking, and no official page says one qualifies you for the transit visa.
Approval is not automatic. Discover Qatar says: “All visas are approved and issued at the sole discretion of Qatar’s Ministry of Interior.” If entry is declined despite meeting the requirements, it will refund the tour. The Ministry’s own visa services page (portal.moi.gov.qa) carries inquiry, printing and extension tools and publishes no transit rules. If you apply for a visa before travelling instead, HIA gives processing as up to 2 weeks, or about 5 to 6 days on fast track, and Hayya’s FAQ says there is no fixed service level.
Discover Qatar transit tours
Discover Qatar, Qatar Airways’ destination company, sells the first-party tours. Its transit page lists:
| Tour | Minimum transit | From (per person) |
|---|---|---|
| Discover Doha, day or night | 6 hours | QAR 115 |
| Discover Doha Your Way, day or night | 6 hours | QAR 140 |
| Desert and Inland Sea, private | 8 hours | QAR 227, based on five in a vehicle |
| Relaxation at the Airport | 3 hours | QAR 305 |
The Relaxation tour is a massage booking at the airport’s Oryx hotel. The others leave the airport, so Qatar Airways’ terms apply:
- You meet at the desk 90 minutes before the tour starts.
- You should choose a tour that drops you back 2 hours before your onward flight.
- Tours cannot be extended once they begin.
- You can book on arrival at a desk until 2 hours before the start, subject to availability.
HIA’s own transfers page still describes an older line-up, including a 4 hour airport art tour, so rely on Discover Qatar’s page. Qatar Airways’ tour page shows higher starting prices for the two private tours (QAR 867 for the desert tour, QAR 700 for Doha Your Way) without saying why, so confirm the price at booking.
If you are visa-free and the timetable does not suit, Doha day tours sold through Viator are a separate booking with another operator. They carry their own timing risk, so keep the same margin before your flight. Under 6 hours, no official page lists a tour that leaves the airport.
Stopovers of 12 to 96 hours
Discover Qatar and Qatar Airways both describe stopover packages for a transit of 12 to 96 hours: up to four hotel nights, from USD 14 (QAR 52) per person for one night in a four-star room on double occupancy, or USD 24 for five stars. Qatar Airways’ terms say the offer is for Qatar Airways and code-share tickets and the hotel check-in date must match your arrival. Discover Qatar’s page also names oneworld member airlines. Qatar Airways adds that “A valid visa may be required”, that passports from certain countries must book through Discover Qatar or Qatar Airways Holidays, and that you should use Hayya for an e-visa.
Gulf nationals
Visit Qatar states: “Nationals of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates) do not require a visa to enter Qatar.” The checker says “Enter visa-free as GCC citizen.” Residents of those countries who hold another passport use the A2 visa, which Hayya describes as for GCC residents travelling from their country of residence, with a GCC ID valid three months from arrival and a QAR 100 fee.
