SafetyWing Nomad Insurance, Read Against the Four Clauses

Our travel insurance test checks the evacuation limit, pre-existing wording, activities exclusion and what your card already does. This is what SafetyWing's own published table says against it.

✓ Checked and fact-checked

Four clauses decide a travel insurance claim, and the price is not one of them. This site links SafetyWing’s Nomad Insurance from six articles and had never read its numbers against that test. This page does.

Every figure is from SafetyWing’s own coverage table for Nomad Insurance Essential, its travel medical plan, read on 21 September 2026. The figures move, so check the table before you buy.

1. Medical evacuation, not medical treatment

Our own guide calls the evacuation limit the most important number on any policy. A large treatment ceiling over a small evacuation ceiling covers the cheap risk well and the expensive one badly.

SafetyWing publishes both:

  • Medical treatment and hospitalisation: US$250,000 maximum.
  • Evacuation to a better equipped hospital: US$100,000 lifetime maximum.
  • Evacuation from local unrest: US$10,000 lifetime.

The two evacuation lines cover different events with different caps, so one number does not cover being moved for any reason. Lifetime means the cap does not reset each trip or policy year.

Whether US$100,000 is enough depends on where you travel. An air ambulance from a regional Indonesian island to Singapore, or out of Nepal, can run well into six figures once you add a medical escort.

2. The pre-existing condition clause

Most policies exclude pre-existing conditions unless you declare them and pay more. Essential offers no such trade. SafetyWing’s table says:

The Essential plan does not cover pre-existing conditions, maternity care or cancer treatment. Limited coverage for visits to your home country.

You cannot declare a condition and buy your way back in on that plan. The Complete plan is a different product: full health insurance rather than travel medical cover, renewable indefinitely, with cancer treatment included and no home-country restriction. It costs US$177.50 a month for ages 18 to 39, against US$62.72 per four weeks for Essential.

If you take regular medication, read the policy document rather than the summary. This clause decides whether the cheaper plan covers you.

3. The activities exclusion, and the scooter question

Our guide says most Southeast Asia claims fail here. SafetyWing’s table is more direct than most:

  • Injuries from leisure sports and activities: covered, US$250,000 maximum. The full activity list is published separately; check it for anything you would call adventurous.
  • Adventure sports: a separate paid add-on, not part of the base plan.
  • Motor accidents: covered to US$250,000, “If properly licensed, wearing all safety equipment and not intoxicated”.

The third line is the scooter problem. Renting a scooter on a car licence is routine across Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia, and rental shops rarely ask. The policy does ask. Properly licensed means licensed for that vehicle, and all safety equipment means the helmet you were not going to wear for a ten-minute ride to dinner.

Sort out the licence before you rent, not after you fall off. This is SafetyWing’s own published condition, not our inference.

4. What the rest of the table pays

CoverPublished limit
Overall plan limitUS$250,000
Emergency dentalup to US$1,000
Lost checked luggageUS$500 per item, US$3,000 per plan
Travel delayUS$60 for a 3 to 8 hour delay, US$150 beyond 8 hours
Trip interruption, family deathUS$5,000 toward a ticket home
Repatriation of remainsUS$20,000 transport, US$10,000 local burial

Set the delay payment against our guide to what an airline owes you in Asia, which finds that most of the region has no statutory compensation at all. US$60 does not make up for a ruined day, but on a night with no legal entitlement it pays for a hotel room you did not plan on.

Cover runs up to 364 days at a time, with up to 30 days of medical cover in your home country. US coverage is an extra for non-residents, not included.

Who underwrites it

SafetyWing (Managing General Agent) Ltd, registered in Turks and Caicos, administers the plan as managing general agent. The insurance is underwritten by SafetyWing Insurance I.I., an international insurer domiciled in Puerto Rico. That differs from buying from a large domestic insurer in your own country, so weigh it before a claim rather than during one.

Our commission

We earn a commission if you buy through our links. SafetyWing’s partnerships team confirmed in writing on 23 September 2026 that the referral fee is benchmarked at approximately 10% of the premium on valid completed applications through our link, for both Nomad Insurance Essential and Nomad Complete, credited to the first link a reader clicks for 364 days. Before that answer arrived this section said we could not tell you the rate, because the fee sat in a schedule we had not been able to open. The fee does not change what the coverage table says, and this page is built from that table.

Before you buy

  • Price the evacuation cap against your route. US$100,000 lifetime is comfortable for well-served cities and thin for remote Indonesia, Nepal or Laos. That number should decide the plan more than the monthly price does.
  • Read the activity list if you will ride, dive or trek, and buy the adventure add-on. Check what the base plan calls leisure against what you plan to do.
  • If you take regular medication, rule out Essential. Compare the Complete plan or a single-trip policy from your own market; our four-clause test works on those too.
