Press coverage of Thailand’s automated passport channels has run ahead of what any government body has published. This page lists what is published, by whom and on what date, so you can judge whether to expect an e-gate on your own arrival.
Hold a Singapore or Hong Kong passport and the automated channels at Suvarnabhumi are open to you today. With any other passport, plan on a staffed counter and treat a machine as a bonus.
What is open at Suvarnabhumi
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) reported a multi-agency review at the airport on 16 July 2026, led by the Minister of Tourism and Sports. It states:
These channels are currently available to eligible passport holders from Singapore and Hong Kong.
The same release covers what comes next:
The second phase of the system is scheduled to begin in September 2026. Authorities will also consider extending eligibility to travellers from other lower-risk markets.
“Scheduled” and “will consider” name a direction. They give no list of passports and no date to plan a connection around. The release says the expanded capacity is expected to reduce congestion in immigration areas by more than 50 per cent.
Hong Kong’s eligibility is not new. TAT announced automated channel access for Hong Kong travellers entering Thailand in 2018, so this is an existing system being widened.
The 33-nationality claim
From 20 September 2026 travel blogs have reported that Suvarnabhumi opened its e-gates to citizens of 33 countries. We checked and could not confirm it.
The number traces back to Thai coverage of the ministerial site visit in August, which describes it as preparation for the high season. No TAT release carries it. The blogs that repeat it attribute it to traveller reports from a single weekend, not to an announcement.
The Immigration Bureau’s site and the government’s central portal both sit behind a bot challenge that refuses automated readers, so we cannot say no list exists on them. No page we reached publishes a list of 33 nationalities or an effective date for one. If one appears, this page will say so. Until then, queue for the counter.
Phuket’s published conditions
For Phuket International Airport, TAT published the operating rules when the Automatic Border Channel system opened at the International Departure Immigration Area on 13 June 2026. Blog summaries leave these out, and they decide whether the machine will take you:
- An electronic passport (e-Passport). A machine-readable paper passport is not enough.
- At least six months, or 180 days, of remaining validity.
- A minimum height of 120 centimetres, which rules out younger children.
- No baggage higher than 120 centimetres through the channel.
- No pregnant passengers.
- Face masks, glasses and hats off before you present the passport.
- The passport out of its cover, sleeve or wrapping, one passport on the reader at a time, nothing placed on top.
Thai nationals may use all available ABC channels. Anyone the system will not process is directed to an officer.
Departures and arrivals
Phuket’s June rollout is for international departures. The Suvarnabhumi work described in July targets arrivals congestion. The Immigration Bureau’s standing public notice about automatic channels also covers departures.
So on one trip at one airport, an e-gate can exist for your departure and not for your arrival. Check which direction a report describes before you plan around it.
Neither departure channel is a place to pay anything. The 1,120 baht charge on an international departure from Phuket or Suvarnabhumi is collected in your fare when the ticket is issued.
What this does not change
An automated channel is a faster queue. It does not change what you need to enter Thailand.
- You still complete the arrival form. The Thailand Digital Arrival Card, what it asks for and when to submit it is a separate step, done before you fly. No immigration channel replaces it.
- Your permitted stay is whatever your passport is granted. The 30-day visa exemption change that took effect on 15 September answers how long you may stay.
What we would do
- Check your passport against the one sourced sentence: Singapore and Hong Kong today, everyone else at a counter.
- Flying out of Phuket, read the seven conditions above before you join the automated queue.
- If a second publisher repeats the 33-nationality story this week, count it as the same unsourced claim. Wait for the Immigration Bureau or TAT to publish a list and a date.
