Cathay Membership: the Benefits You Lose by Not Adding Your Number

Four statuses, one eight-day rule, and a cancellation benefit narrower than it sounds

Several Cathay benefits attach to the booking, not the member, and only if you add your number at the right moment.

The four statuses

Cathay has Green, Silver, Gold and Diamond. The thresholds are Status Points to upgrade or renew:

  • 300 Status Points: Silver
  • 600 Status Points: Gold
  • 1,200 Status Points: Diamond

The number that earns a status also renews it, so holding a tier costs the same each year as reaching it did.

Cathay also states that a revised program, described as a faster path to progress with greater simplicity across all statuses, takes effect 1 January 2027. Plans beyond that date rest on rules that are changing.

What each tier adds

Green earns Asia Miles and Status Points. It gets priority online check-in up to 48 hours in advance, extra baggage redemption, extra legroom seat redemption, and 24-hour free cancellation.

Silver adds lounge access redemption and purchase, business class lounge access, advance seat reservation, business class counter check-in, priority group boarding, priority baggage handling, and special rates on miles for shopping and dining.

Gold adds an additional checked baggage allowance, priority redemption on lifestyle events, experiences and travel packages, and complimentary inflight Wi-Fi.

Diamond adds first class counter check-in and boarding, first class lounge access, and special rates on miles when redeeming flights with Miles Plus Cash.

Green has no lounge route

Every new member starts at Green, and most stay there. Lounge access first appears at Silver, including the redemption and purchase options, so Green has no lounge route through the programme. Silver is 300 Status Points away, which for most people is a year of flying.

In Hong Kong you can skip that wait. Plaza Premium began here and runs several rooms across HKG, and a single visit can be booked without any status. Access is granted per lounge, so check which terminal and gate area a room is in before you pay.

Add your number at booking

Cathay’s own note: add your Cathay membership number during booking to ensure you enjoy your member benefits.

For Green members without prior travel history in their Cathay account, leaving the number off the booking cuts online check-in from the 48-hour benefit to the ordinary 24 hours before departure.

A booking made without the number is not repaired afterwards for these purposes. Check the reservation rather than assuming the number carried over from a profile.

The eight-day rule on free cancellation

“24-hour free cancellation” is not a blanket right. It does not apply where:

  • the first flight departs within eight days (192 hours), or
  • the membership number was not applied during the booking process.

It is only available for bookings made on Cathay’s own website, its official mobile application, or the Cathay Pacific WeChat Mini Programme. Other terms and conditions apply on top.

That rules out the last-minute booking, the one most likely to need cancelling, and anything booked through a travel agent or third-party site.

Mid-status benefits

Reaching certain Status Points milestones within a status earns complimentary mid-status benefits, without completing the tier:

  • First or Business class lounge passes, shareable with a travel companion or a redemption group nominee
  • Bookable upgrades to the next cabin class on a Cathay Pacific flight, usable for yourself or a companion
  • a complimentary Gold companion, gifting Cathay Gold membership to a family member or friend

The lounge passes arrive on reaching a milestone. A Green member with no Status Points has nothing to claim, so buying the visit outright is the only lounge option until the first milestone.

These are automatically added to the account and are visible when logged in. Unused ones are renewed within one month upon expiration, so an unclaimed benefit is not necessarily lost, but it does need claiming.

Flying oneworld

As a Cathay member you earn Asia Miles and Status Points, and receive priority services, when flying in eligible classes with any oneworld member airline. Status Points on partner metal depend on the fare you bought, not just on flying the alliance.
