An individual member airline’s own frequent flyer program grants Star Alliance Gold. The alliance publishes one shared benefits page that says what Gold should guarantee whichever airline issued the card.
Getting through the airport faster
Gold gets you priority check-in: “Skip the standard queues and head to the Priority check-in counters. Just look for the Star Alliance Gold sign.”
At security and immigration, Gold Track fast-track lanes are available where offered: “Fast track your way through airport security and immigration with exclusive access to the Gold Track lanes, where available.” Not every airport runs one.
Gold members are also “among the first to board, ensuring a smooth and effortless start to your journey”.
Baggage
Gold adds an extra 20 kg (44 pounds), or an additional piece of luggage, “depending on the airline’s baggage policy.” The operating carrier’s own rules decide which of the two you get.
Checked bags are tagged for priority handling, “ensuring it’s among the first to arrive on the belt.”
Lounge access
Gold gets you into “over 1,000 airport lounges worldwide, including six Star Alliance lounges,” on any Star Alliance member airline, not only the one whose card you hold.

The waitlist
If your booked class of service is fully sold, Gold gives “higher priority on the waitlist when a reservation is possible.” That is a queue position, not a guaranteed seat.
Heathrow Express
Gold members and one companion get a complimentary upgrade to PREMIER+ on the Heathrow Express, the rail link between Heathrow and London Paddington. It is the only city-specific benefit on the page. Star Alliance gives the steps:
Star Alliance Gold Status members and one companion receive a complimentary upgrade to PREMIER+ on Heathrow Express. Simply purchase a PREMIER+ single or return ticket for Heathrow Express, the fastest rail link between London Heathrow airport and London Paddington station, and show your FFP card on board when requested.
Silver and the qualifying thresholds are missing
The page is titled around both Gold and Silver, but everything on it describes Gold. It gives no list for Silver, the tier most occasional travellers reach first. It also does not say how many miles, segments or nights any airline requires for Gold. Each airline’s own program sets that.
One airline’s answer: Air India
Air India publishes its threshold for its own programme, Maharaja Club, so it works as an example. Its alliances page says that “Maharaja Club Platinum & Gold members are mapped to Star Alliance Gold tier status and Maharaja Club Silver members are mapped to Star Alliance Silver tier.”
Gold has two routes, counted over the last 365 days:
- “Earn 30,000 Tier Points, including a minimum of 9,000 Tier Points on Air India or Air India Express flights”, or
- “Complete 45 flights, including a minimum of 8 flights on Air India or Air India Express”.
Tier Points come at 6 per INR 100 of base fare and fuel surcharge on Air India, at every tier. The points route flown entirely on Air India is therefore about INR 500,000 of fares in a year. The rest can be flown on other Star Alliance members, which earn 1 Tier Point for every 2 Maharaja Points. Where you buy the ticket changes your balance, not your tier. Air India adds 2 bonus Maharaja Points per INR 100 on bookings made on its own website and app. Those are the spendable kind, and its earn page says that bonus points from offers and promotions “will not affect your Tier Points”.
Booking channel does matter once you hold the tier, for the extras Air India adds on top of the alliance set. Complimentary seat selection applies only on Air India-operated flights and “only on tickets booked via air india web, app and call center”. The change-fee waivers are limited to Air India-operated tickets bought through its website, app, call centre or ticketing offices. Air India’s tier comparison sets out each of those conditions. None of them is a Star Alliance benefit, so none follows you onto another member airline.
