ANA Miles: Which Ones Expire First, and Who Else Can Use Them

Four mileage groups, a 36-month clock in Japan time, and a two-degree family rule

Not all miles in an ANA account are the same kind, and the people who can use them are defined narrowly.

The four mileage groups

ANA sorts miles into groups by the reason they were credited.

  • Group 1, regular miles. Earned from flights and from Life Solution Services, ANA’s term for everyday services such as shopping alongside air travel.
  • Group 2. Campaign miles from promotions and other activities. Time limited.
  • Group 3. Campaign miles that are time and usage limited.
  • Group 4. Campaign miles related to aviation services. Time limited.

Usage limited means the miles cannot pay for everything. ANA publishes, per award type, which groups are eligible. Flight awards, upgrade awards, ANA SKY COINS and additional baggage allowance each have their own list.

Some promotions credit to Group 1 anyway. The mileage account group and expiration date are announced on each campaign’s own website.

When miles expire

Group 1 miles are valid until the end of the month up to the 36th month counting from the month a service or product was used. The month of use starts the clock, not the month the miles appeared in your account. It is the Date of use shown under Activity Details. Validity for Groups 2 to 4 varies by campaign.

Mileage expires on Japan Standard Time, at 23:59. From the United States, that cut-off arrives hours before your own last day of the month ends. Do not plan a redemption for that day from a US timezone.

Which miles get spent first

Miles are deducted in order of the earliest expiration date, automatically. You do not choose.

Where miles in different groups share an expiry date, they are combined and deducted in the order Group 4, 3, 2, 1: campaign miles first, regular miles last. The most restricted, soonest-to-expire miles go before your flexible ones.

Who can use your miles

  • The AMC primary member.
  • Their spouse or same-sex partner.
  • Relatives within two degrees of family relationship.

ANA does not list on this page who “two degrees” includes. The usual measure of kinship reaches parents and children at the first degree, and grandparents, grandchildren and siblings at the second. Confirm anyone at the edge of it with ANA before you rely on it.

Award user registration is required in advance, not at the point of booking. Only the primary member can redeem miles for partner points.

Who can apply

The primary member’s identity is verified at the time of the award application, and you need the 10-digit AMC membership number to hand. The application will not be accepted if no number is provided.

Applications by people other than the primary member are generally not accepted. Where an application is made by proxy, the proxy’s identity is verified too.

So register the family member well ahead, then have the primary member make the booking. A spouse cannot redeem on the member’s behalf just because they are family.

Delivery address

Awards are delivered only to the postal address registered on the account, though other delivery addresses can be designated in some cases. If you have moved, update the account before you need it.
