ANA Partner Awards: More Routing Freedom Than ANA's Own Metal

The stopover and transfer limits loosen considerably once you leave ANA aircraft

ANA runs two award rulebooks. This page covers the partner one: awards on Star Alliance carriers rather than ANA aircraft. It loosens nearly every routing limit that applies on ANA’s own flights. Everything below is from ANA’s own partner-award page.

ANA’s own flights against partner flights

ANA’s own flightsPartner flights
Stopover, one wayNot allowedNot allowed

Transfers, round tripOne in Japan per legUp to six: one outbound and one inbound in Japan, two outbound and two return overseas

On ANA metal, a round trip that departs from Japan cannot include a stopover. On partner awards that restriction does not exist. You get one stopover besides the destination, wherever you start.

As on ANA’s own flights, stopovers count toward your number of connections, and a ground transportation segment counts as one transfer for both endpoint cities.

Cost

Partner awards start from 7,500 miles one way and 15,000 return. One-way redemption became available for reservations and tickets issued after 24 June 2025.

Required mileage depends on the zones your departure and arrival airports fall into and the class you fly. It does not change with seasonality, unlike ANA’s own seasonal pricing. Infants and children require the same number of miles as adults.

On top of the miles, you pay a minimum of USD 57 (ANA’s stated figure as of February 2015) for taxes, Passenger Facility Charge, fuel surcharge and other fees. It is charged in advance, by credit card, at ticket issuance.

Mixing airlines

Flights on different airlines can be freely incorporated into one itinerary when they are operated by Star Alliance member airlines and Star Alliance Connecting Partners. Limits:

  • Only Star Alliance member airlines are eligible for Round-the-World tickets. Connecting Partners are not.
  • Japan domestic connections must be operated by ANA, for flights boarding on or after the date ANA specifies. A domestic leg on another carrier will not work.
  • Codeshare flights are not available for these awards.

Bus and rail sectors can be used when operated under Lufthansa or Austrian flight numbers. That is how a train leg becomes part of an award.

Exclusions

  • Singapore Airlines First Class redemption has been paused since 15 June 2020.
  • On Singapore Airlines, Suites, First and Business may not be available for award reservation on the A350-900, A380-800, B787-10 and B777-300ER.
  • Awards cannot be used for the Beijing-Pyongyang sector operated by Air China.
  • Japan domestic sectors are Economy Class only.

ANA also warns that depending on the partner airline, there may be cases when awards cannot be used at all.

Newly bookable

Lufthansa City Airlines (VL) flights became eligible from 12 November 2025, and ITA Airways (AZ) from 1 April 2026. On Avianca, flights operated by Avianca (AV), TACA (TA) and Avianca Costa Rica (LR) are all eligible.

Ticketing deadline

Partner award reservations carry a ticketing deadline, and it is enforced automatically: if ticketing is not completed by the specified deadline, the reservation is canceled. Diary the date.
